Job Summary: To ensure the highest level of service possible to all customers. To ensure organized and smoothly run Grocery and HABA departments including ordering, pricing, inventory control and presentation. Manage, motivate and provide Grocery and HABA department staff with the training and tools required to be successful in their jobs. Meet department objectives for sales, margin, turns and labor goals.

Responsibilities:
Customer Service
Strong focus on excellent customer service.
Ensure efficient, informative and friendly service, treating people fairly, consistently, and with respect.
Purchasing and Pricing
Coordinate with department buyers in purchasing of products following established procedures and schedule to ensure adequate stock levels and appropriate category mix. Ensure that out of stocks are kept to a minimum.
Understand and use category management to ensure proper product mix and category sets.
Ensure correct product rotation.
Coordinate returns and credits from suppliers when needed and ensure that staff knows how to do the same.
Review invoices for accuracy and price changes
Establish prices to achieve margin goals
Ensure accurate up-to-date price scanning and labeling of department items.
Communicate ordering times, deadlines and changes in delivery times to buyers.
Merchandising
Work with buying staff to:
Ensure displays and shelves are fully stocked, rotated, fronted and faced.
Set stocking priorities for department staff. Stock items as needed.
Ensure proper shelf tags and sale signs are on shelves and displays.
Plan attractive displays. Coordinate displays and specials with buyers. Ensure that monthly displays and end caps are set up accurately, attractively and in a timely manner.
Plan promotions and storewide merchandising, including cross department merchandising when appropriate.
Plan and coordinate storewide promotions and sampling.
Provide product information to customers, staff and newsletter.
Keep up to date on market changes and competition. Work with GM to incorporate necessary storewide changes.
Attend trade shows as assigned: read industry and trade journals.
Department Operations
Ensure that department aisles, shelves and storage areas are always in clean, orderly condition meeting health department and customer service standards.
Ensure staff is scheduled and available to meet customers’ requests and needs.
Ensure that non-saleable items are returned or otherwise properly disposed of following established procedures and that appropriate shrink records are maintained.
Assign tasks daily to ensure productive work flow.
Ensure equipment is maintained and properly serviced. Advise GM of equipment repair/replacement needs.
Plan and participate in inventory counts.
Ensure staff is following safety, sanitation and security procedures.
Management Responsibilities
Leadership
Model supportive, participatory and fair leadership qualities, promote team building and motivate staff to achieve their stated objectives.
Ensure that communications are clear, direct and respectful.
Personnel
Develop and uphold performance standards for Grocery and HABA staff.
Schedule staff according to weekly labor budget.
Hire qualified staff when necessary.
Develop and ensure staff training plan. Successfully complete training checklists with new department staff.
Motivate and provide staff with the tools and materials required to ensure high quality and efficient job performance.
Provide thorough and thoughtful performance evaluations to department staff.
Take corrective counseling measures and/or disciplinary action as needed for all department staff, according to established personnel policies.
Ensure effective communication with staff regarding department operations.

Financial, Budgeting and Planning
Work with GM to establish department goals for sales, margin, labor and inventory.
Work with GM to develop annual operating budget, sales projections, capital budget and equipment needs.
Review departmental financial reports regularly and react appropriately.

Other
Attend management team meetings.
Work MOD shifts as scheduled, with focus on total store operations.
Perform all other duties included in department staff position descriptions.

All Staff Duties
Abide by all Co-op policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook and other company documents.
Keep store/office orderly and clean.
Maintain positive attitude.
Perform all other duties as assigned by GM.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Outstanding customer service skills
Previous retail grocery experience
Management experience – hiring, training and evaluating
Previous experience with ordering, pricing and inventory control
Experience in planning, developing and implementing systems, procedures and policies
Familiarity with natural foods and natural foods industry
Attention to detail and good organizational skills
Ability to handle multiple demands, work under time pressures and meet deadlines
Willingness to be open, to learn and take on new responsibilities
Demonstrate objectivity, neutrality and calmness under pressure
Regular, predictable attendance
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Effective communication skills in English
Ability to read and comprehend instructions
Ability to appropriately delegate work duties and manage and motivate staff
Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments
Proven ability to develop and implement budgets and to adhere to cost and margin requirements
Ability to work in a fast passed environment
Good computer/typing skills

Essential Physical Requirements
Standing, walking, bending, sitting, reaching
Regular use of sharp cutting instruments
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
