Make Your Own BBQ Sauce: Chipotle Cherry Barbecue Sauce


BBQ sauce is a strange, much sought after beast. We’ve got a recipe that’s sure to please if you’re looking for a simple way to do it yourself this summer at the grill.

We love this recipe because it’s so versatile. You can use it to marinate tofu, tempeh, chicken, and more before grilling or you can use it as a tasty condiment. The smokiness of chipotle peppers is enriched by the sweetness of the cherries. The result is a sure taste delight that will leave you and any hungry mouths you’re feeding happy this grilling season.

Chipotle Cherry Barbecue Sauce

Makes approximately 12 servings. Prep time: 10 minutes active; 70 minutes total.


  • 2 cups cherries, washed and pitted
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons stone-ground mustard
  • 1 ½ teaspoon smoked sea salt
  • ²⁄3 cups canned diced tomatoes with chilies
  • ¼ cup canned chipotle sauce
  • 1⁄3 cup turbinado sugar


Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor. Blend until well combined and transfer to a saucepan. Cook, stirring occasionally, on medium heat for about 60 minutes until sauce is reduced by half, or reaches desired thickness.
